RedNote and Social Media Marketing in Clayton
RedNote and Instagram marketing for Clayton businesses around Monash University: restaurants, cafes and everyday services for Chinese-speaking students. RedNote from A$469/month.
Redluck Digital is an officially certified Xiaohongshu (RedNote) operations service provider. Clayton is the campus suburb of our list: Monash University's largest campus sits here, and a business on the streets around it is often serving people who arrived in Melbourne recently and do not yet know where to eat.
This page is for Clayton owners deciding whether RedNote (Xiaohongshu, 小红书) and Instagram are worth running. It is built on council-area figures rather than a suburb table, and says so where it matters.
The Monash area in the 2021 Census
Clayton sits inside the City of Monash, which also takes in Oakleigh, Wheelers Hill, Glen Waverley and Mount Waverley. We have not pulled a separate Clayton suburb table, so these are the council-area figures, which are the ones our east and south-east guide already uses.
| Measure | Monash (council area) | Victoria |
|---|---|---|
| Chinese ancestry | 47,227 people (24.8%) | 6.6% |
| Speak Mandarin at home | 29,014 (15.2%) | 3.4% |
Source: ABS, 2021 Census QuickStats, Monash (C) (local government areas); Victoria figures from the same table. Percentages are shares of all residents. Ancestry allows up to two answers per person, so ancestries add up to more than 100%. The Census counts where people live, not who visits.
A campus suburb, not a family suburb
Glen Waverley is a suburb of households deciding together. Clayton is different: the people around Monash's campus are largely students and young professionals, many of them from China, who eat out often, move between share houses and rent, and look for everything from a hairdresser to a dentist in a new city. According to the Department of Education's June 2026 data, China is the largest source country of international students in Australia, at 23%.
They do not have a family doctor, a regular barber or a favourite dumpling shop yet. They find them by searching, in Chinese, on RedNote. For a Clayton restaurant or service business, that search result is the first impression.
Restaurants and everyday services
The main trade areas are Clayton Road and the streets around Clayton station, a short trip from the campus. A student searching for lunch, supper or a birthday table compares a handful of places on screen before walking out. The posts that win are specific: the dish, the price, how long the queue was, whether groups can sit together.
The same applies to the everyday services that cluster near a campus: hair and nails, tutoring and exam help, phone and laptop repair, physio and dental, moving and storage. These businesses usually have English-speaking regulars and a separate stream of Chinese-speaking customers who never see the English posts. We cover both: Instagram in bilingual posts, and RedNote written natively in Chinese.
Students change every semester
A campus customer base turns over. New students arrive each semester and others graduate or move away, so a business that posts once and stops gets forgotten within a year. That is the case for a steady rhythm over a burst: RedNote notes keep being found through search months after they are posted, and a new cohort that searches the same dish or service finds the same business.
It is also why timing matters. Orientation periods and the start of each semester are when newcomers search hardest for places near campus. We plan the content calendar around those weeks, and we are upfront that a brand-new account typically gets only a few hundred views in its first month while verification and the content foundation go in.
What we have done in this part of Melbourne
For a cafe in Melbourne's east we ran a two-month creator program: 22 creators visited against a contracted 20, reaching a combined follower pool of roughly 158,000, with 1,780 likes and 304 comments across the Instagram posts and 780 likes on the best single post. A sports physiotherapy clinic account we run recorded 8,294 note views in 30 days, up 84.56% on the previous 30 days, with 1,175 profile visitors and 63 follows from the profile. Those are accounts outside Clayton, and what a running account produces, not a promise for a new one.
GAC Ferntree Gully, a car dealership on Melbourne's east side, is a client whose RedNote account we built from zero, with blue-V business verification approved inside the first service month. The east and south-east guide has more: RedNote marketing in Melbourne's east and south-east.
Where to start, and what it costs
For a Clayton venue that wants customers through the door soon, creator visits come first: A$299 for 5 creators, a flat fee, with your business providing the meal or service, and we source, brief and follow up. A RedNote account of your own starts from A$469/month for 10 original notes, with content planning, comment and message handling and an English monthly report. Instagram management is A$699/month for 10 bilingual posts.
The account needs blue-V business verification before any ad spend, and that is where we begin if you have no account yet. Our office is in Malvern East, a short drive from Clayton, so we can meet in person.
