Social Media Marketing for Local Businesses in Melbourne's East and South-East

Instagram, Google or RedNote? How to choose if you run a business in Oakleigh, Clayton, Caulfield, Glen Iris and nearby, with ABS language data by council area.

If you run a shop, clinic, cafe or service business in Oakleigh, Clayton, Caulfield, Glen Iris or the streets around them, the question is rarely "do I need social media marketing?" It is "which platform reaches my customers, and how much of my week should it take?" The answer depends on who lives and shops around you, and in Melbourne's east and south-east that mix changes a lot from one council area to the next.

Start with who lives around you

The ABS 2021 Census shows how different neighbouring council areas are. These are the people reporting Chinese ancestry and the people using Mandarin at home:

  • Greater Melbourne: 409,285 people reported Chinese ancestry (8.3%); 212,680 used Mandarin at home (4.3%).
  • Monash (the council area that includes Clayton, Oakleigh, Wheelers Hill, Glen Waverley and Mount Waverley): 47,227 reported Chinese ancestry (24.8%); 29,014 used Mandarin at home (15.2%).
  • Boroondara (including Camberwell and most of Glen Iris): 30,512 reported Chinese ancestry (18.2%); 17,412 used Mandarin at home (10.4%).
  • Glen Eira (including Caulfield, Bentleigh, Glen Huntly, Ormond and Carnegie): 8,384 used Mandarin at home (5.6%).

Ancestry is a multiple-response question, so it counts people who reported it, not a single group. The point is the spread: a street in Monash and a street in Glen Eira can have very different customers, and a plan that works for one will under-reach the other. We have not pulled the figures for every council area; the ABS QuickStats page for your own area takes a minute to check and is worth doing before you commit a budget.

What each channel is actually for

  • Instagram and Facebook. A running record of the business for English-speaking local customers and for anyone who looks you up after hearing your name: opening hours, menu or services, recent work, real photos. Our bilingual Instagram management is from A$699/month for 10 bilingual posts plus stories.
  • Your Google listing and reviews. Free, and where people check hours, location and reviews before they travel. Keep the details correct and reply to reviews. This is housekeeping, not marketing spend, and it comes before everything else.
  • Google Ads. Paid search for people already looking for what you sell. It works for services with a clear search term; see Google Ads and SEM.
  • RedNote (Xiaohongshu). A search-driven platform where Chinese-speaking customers research restaurants, clinics, beauty services and local trades before spending. Our account management is from A$469/month for 10 original notes. If you are new to it, start with what RedNote is and who uses it in Australia.

WeChat is a fifth channel, but it is for keeping customers, not finding them. We compare all three Chinese platforms in WeChat vs RedNote vs Douyin.

Match the channel to the street

  • Mostly English-speaking customers (Glen Eira's Mandarin-speaking share, 5.6%, is the lowest of the areas above): put your effort into Instagram and your Google listing first. RedNote can wait.
  • A mixed customer base (much of Monash): run Instagram and RedNote side by side, with the same shoot feeding both and the captions written natively in each language, not translated.
  • A student or young-professional crowd (around the Monash University Clayton campus, for example): RedNote is worth considering first. China is the largest source country of international students, at 23% according to the Department of Education's June 2026 data.
  • Chinese-speaking customers are your core (our Box Hill and Glen Waverley pages cover this case): lead with RedNote and creator visits, and keep Instagram as the English-language record.

Pick one lead channel and do it consistently before adding a second. A business that posts ten times in a week and then goes quiet for two months teaches every platform to ignore it. We work to 10 posts a month for exactly that reason.

What the first three months look like

The content that works is shot in the actual room, with the actual staff and the actual food or work, not stock imagery. A phone is enough to start. Reply to comments and messages quickly; a question left for two days is probably a customer lost.

Set expectations honestly. A brand-new RedNote account typically gets a few hundred views in its first month while verification and the foundation go in. Creator visits are the fastest way to get people through the door while your own account builds: our package is A$299 for 5 creators, a flat fee, and you provide the experience. For a worked example of a first month and a mature account, read what the first 30 days actually look like.

Track the things that sit close to a sale: saves and shares, profile visits, and messages asking for a booking or a price. Likes are the easiest number to inflate and the least useful.

Suburb notes

Businesses in Oakleigh, Clayton, Wheelers Hill and Ashwood sit in or beside Monash, where 15.2% of residents use Mandarin at home, so a bilingual approach usually earns its place. Along the Monash and Glen Eira border, Chadstone, Hughesdale and Murrumbeena businesses should check the numbers for the side of the border their customers come from. In Caulfield, Bentleigh and Glen Huntly the Glen Eira figure suggests a smaller Mandarin-speaking base, so English-language channels lead. Glen Iris and Camberwell mostly sit in Boroondara, where the Mandarin-speaking share is higher than Glen Eira's; see our Camberwell page. For Blackburn, Forest Hill, Mont Albert and Springvale, the same logic applies: check your own area before assuming either way.

Where we have a dedicated page, it goes deeper: Box Hill, Glen Waverley, Mount Waverley and Carnegie. The broader picture is in RedNote marketing in Melbourne's east and south-east.

Where to start

Fix the Google listing this week. Choose one lead channel from the list above based on who your customers are. Commit to a posting rhythm you can keep for at least three months. We are a bilingual team based in Box Hill and can come to you; the social media and digital growth service page has the detail, and the Melbourne RedNote marketing page has the prices.
