Douyin (抖音) — ByteDance's short-video app for mainland China, launched in 2016, with roughly 900 million monthly active users inside China. TikTok — ByteDance's international short-video app. Same parent company as Douyin, but a separate product. And to answer the follow-up question people usually ask next: Douyin and TikTok are not the same app either. They run separate account systems and separate content pools. A TikTok login does not work on Douyin, followers do not transfer, and searching the same keyword in each app returns entirely different videos from entirely different creators. Why the confusion is completely understandable Three reasons. First, all of these apps lean heavily on vertical video, so they look similar in a screenshot. Second, "Chinese TikTok" became the lazy shorthand for anything Chinese with a feed. Third, the English name "RedNote" only entered mainstream Western vocabulary in January 2025, when large numbers of US users signed up to Xiaohongshu during the TikTok ban scare — a lot of people met the name and the app at the same moment, without the context. The distinction matters commercially, because these platforms answer completely different business questions. RedNote: the one Australian businesses can actually use RedNote behaves less like a social feed and more like a search engine crossed with a review site. A verified Douyin business account generally requires a mainland Chinese business licence and a mainland phone number, along with an annual platform fee. An overseas company typically needs a China-registered entity or a mainland partner to get there. The audience sits in China. Douyin's content pool is sealed to the mainland market. You cannot meaningfully target "people within 10 kilometres of Box Hill" on an app whose distribution is designed to serve users inside China. Yes, some Chinese-Australians still watch it. Plenty of people here keep a Douyin habit — but they watch it as a window back to China. It is not where they search for a Melbourne restaurant this Saturday. When Douyin does make sense: when your customer is in China, not in Australia. Exporters, inbound tourism operators, education agents and brands selling cross-border have a genuine reason to build there — with a China entity, a China team and a China budget.
